McPHEE   Tabuh-Tabuhan
     ORFF   Carmina Burana
“Nuclear Gamelan”

The April 27/29 concert program also features Colin McPhee’s Tabuh-Tabuhan. Fascinated by the Balinese gamelan, McPhee became the first Westerner to study, survey and transcribe its music. Of his master work Tabuh-Tabuhan he writes, “I fused Balinese and composed motifs, melodies and rhythms to make a symphonic work. To transfer the intricate, chime-line polyphonic figurations of the gamelan…, I have used a ‘nuclear gamelan’ composed of two pianos, celesta, xylophone, marimba and glockenspiel.”

Hear this groundbreaking, exotic and thrilling work by a man whose name has become a household word in Bali for introducing the music of the gamelan to the west.

Maestro Neale and Michael Steadman of Gamelan Kori Mas discuss Tabuh-Tabuhan pre-concert both nights in Marin Center (6:30pm).

Collaborative publicity of this event provided by the Bali Institute for Global Renewal.
