"Many years ago, when I was a moody, heartsick adolescent, I fell in love with Debussy’s 'Afternoon of a Faun.' I won’t go into why I made a piece of French classical music my anthem of rebellion rather than something by Dylan or The Stones. Let’s just say that I was a fairly eccentric kid and my musical tastes were wired for another time. I grew up in the Bay Area in the 60’s -- a Silicon Valley brat -- in a time and a place that couldn’t have been more cutting edge. It didn’t matter to me. I wanted to be in that lush, elusive, deeply intimate world of the faun. When I turned that music on, my escape from myself was delicious and complete. |
| I eventually outgrew the fragility of my adolescence and was ready to listen to so-called edgier stuff. But when I listen to the faun now, I still feel the swoon. That’s what great music does. It makes you miss a world that you never had but it’s there for you regardless, just beyond your reach." —Jane Anderson |
