MARIN SYMPHONY YOUTH & EDUCATION PROGRAMS

"Enriching and Inspiring Lives Through Music"

The Marin Symphony is extremely proud of its ongoing dedication to the musical education of Marin County’s youth. Through its outreach and tiered education programs, the Marin Symphony has inspired and trained three generations of musicians over the span of more than five decades.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

Our training programs include common elements that the Marin Symphony believes are essential to developing musicianship on any instrument:

  • Refining manuscript reading skills, which include accurate note recognition, rhythm and dynamics interpretation, and tonal key recognition
  • Learning the technical craft of producing a beautiful tone on one’s chosen instrument
  • Gaining exposure to the classical music repertoire
  • Developing the self-discipline to maintain a steady, independent music practice
  • Becoming facile with auditions through experience
  • Learning how to work and blend in groups
  • Becoming adept at performance

Several music training programs support the evolving needs and interests of our budding musicians as they grow. Click to learn more about:

  • Crescendo Program (Beginning – Intermediate orchestral musicianship)
  • Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra (Intermediate – Advanced orchestral musicianship)
  • Marin Symphony Youth Chorus (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced vocal musicianship) (link to www.msychorus.org)
  • Wind Ensemble - The Wind Ensemble includes wind members from the Crescendo Program and our Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra winds. Students perform advanced music for wind bands. Admittance to the Wind Ensemble is through the Crescendo and MSYO programs. See skills requirements for each program above.

SYMPHONY@SCHOOLS

Symphony@Schools is an innovative outreach program that brings symphonic music into the schools, and students into the concert hall. It is designed to challenge and train all levels of young people in musical awareness. To pique students’ interest, Symphony@Schools offers performances by symphony musicians, meetings with musicians (when possible) and complimentary tickets to Marin Symphony performances.

SIT-IN CONCERTS

Sit-In Concerts are essentially open rehearsals performed by the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra. Their purpose is to introduce young people to live, ensemble performance. Children in the “audience” literally sit beside and among the orchestra members so as to observe the sights, sounds, skills and magic of musicianship firsthand.

Sit-In Concerts also regularly feature a “petting zoo,” an instructive and endearing session after the concert where Youth Orchestra members allow the young members of the audience to try the musical instruments out for themselves. The aspirations of many a young musician have been forged in our petting zoos!
