CRESCENDO
PROGRAM
Beginning and Intermediate Musicianship
The
Crescendo program, an extension of the Marin Symphony
Youth Orchestra, allows younger musicians to participate
in a less rigorous, yet just as instructive, organized
musical group.

The 2007-08 Crescendo strings program is divided into three
groups to accommodate the differing skill levels of its students.
Use the following guidelines to determine the best level for
your child:
Workshop Strings
- Entry level
- Studied
for at least 2 years
- Basic note reading
ability (whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes,
dotted quarter notes)
- Use basic bow strokes
(legato, staccato, detaché and
slurs.)
- Scales: (1 octave)
G, D, and C for all students, A for violinists and violists
Crescendo Orchestra
- Studied for at least
3 years
- Read notes comfortably
- Play
in basic duple and triple meters
- Use basic bow strokes
(legato, staccato, detaché) spiccato,
martelé, and hook
- Begin shifting and
vibrato. Violinists and violists 3rd position; cellists
2nd position
- Scales: C, G, D, A,
F, B-flat (2 octaves)
Pre-Advanced Strings
- Read notes and rhythms
comfortably
- Produce mature vibrato
and tone
- Comfortable in 2nd
through 4th positions (tenor clef for cellos)
- Play in more complex
duple and triple meters
- Scales: through 4
sharps and flats (2-3 octaves)
- Graduates are ready
to audition for the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra
Audition requirements:
- Scales as listed
- Representative
solo piece
- Sight reading excerpt
