The
highly acclaimed Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra provides
gifted, auditioned young people with an opportunity to
participate in rich and rewarding orchestral music.
The orchestra
is composed of approximately 80 high school and middle
school musicians in Marin and neighboring communities. |
The Orchestra
rehearses and performs concerts during the academic year
under the direction of Conductor George
Thomson.

MSYO members must be studying privately on their instrument,
and MUST participate in their school music program. Most Youth
Orchestra members have been playing their instrument for four
years or longer. Required skills:
- Strings should demonstrate
full, clear tone production with continuous vibrato. Bowing
techniques should include legato and
spiccato. Strings must be able to play the major scales up to
three sharps and three flats in three octaves (2 octaves for
basses) at quarter note=80 or faster.
- Winds must be able
to play the major scales up to three sharps and three flats
in two octave scales (3 where applicable) in
triplets (slur 3 notes) at quarter note=80 or faster.
Audition requirements:
- Scales as listed above
- Representative solo
piece containing both fast and slow playing
- Sight reading excerpt
