MARIN SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Advanced Musicianship

Acting Artistic Director and Conductor, Ann Krinitsky
Associate Conductor and Orchestra Manager, Andrei Gorchov

The highly acclaimed Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra has been providing young, gifted musicians with an opportunity to participate in a rich and rewarding orchestral community since 1954. The orchestra season follows the academic school year during which they perform a winter and spring concert, along with several Sit-In Concerts as an outreach to local elementary schools. The orchestra is composed of approximately 80 auditioned high school and middle school musicians in Marin and neighboring communities.

Rehearsals: The Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra rehearses weekly at College of Marin, Kentfield, Fine Arts Building.
Rehearsals are on Sundays from 3:00 – 6:00pm

Chamber Music: Members of the Youth Orchestra will have the opportunity to participate in our Chamber Music Program. Special auditions will take place to form a String Quartet, Woodwind, and Brass ensembles. Performance opportunities will outreach to retirement homes and elementary school communities.

Requirements: Participant age ranges from 12-18. Students must be involved in a school music program and study privately with a teacher. Most members in the orchestra have been playing their instrument for four years or longer.

*Players should demonstrate full, clear tone production with vibrato if applicable. Players should have complete control over entire instrument range and demonstrate command in tone, intonation, and articulation. Players should be able to demonstrate scales up to three sharps and three flats in as many octaves as possible (3 octaves where possible, 2 octaves otherwise).

Additional benefits: Members of the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra are granted free admission to all Marin Symphony concerts in Marin Center (Marin Symphony Holiday Concerts and Prelude Recitals excluded). They also receive family member discounts entitling the purchase of two Marin Symphony concert tickets for the price of one. When possible, the Marin Symphony seeks to provide opportunities during the orchestral season where MSYO members receive mentoring and coaching from members of the Marin Symphony orchestra.

Tuition for 2010-11 season (both semesters) is $650 per student, payable in full by the first rehearsal in the fall.

Membership in the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra is by audition only. Click for Audition Information.
